Welcome

Functional Wood Art

Of all objects that can be turned on a wood lathe, the bowl has always attracted the most interest among people. Bowls have always been a symbol of giving and sharing in a very simple and purified way. The large open form of wooden bowls exhibit all aspects of grain, color and texture in a spectacular fashion. The creation of a bowl should always satisfy both hand and eye.

When shaping my objects, I draw inspiration from the wood itself, its texture and the variety of shapes. I partially turn the fresh green wood before setting it aside to dry thoroughly. This gives me time to decide on the final form.

Some species like apple wood resist attempts to dry evenly. Instead it warps and cracks strongly. In my current work of apple tree bowls I turn wood which is still fresh and green. In this state it is a pleasure to cut and handle. I use this process of warping to give my work the desired form.
